Performance Management Through Gamification

This project focuses on using gamification and root cause analysis to track and improve employee performance. It involves the development of two interactive dashboards: a Recognition Dashboard that ranks employees based on key performance metrics and a Root Cause Analysis Dashboard that identifies areas where performance is lacking. The Leaderboard Dashboard rewards top performers and boosts morale, while the Root Cause Analysis Dashboard helps supervisors pinpoint the underlying reasons for underperformance, allowing for targeted improvement efforts. This combined approach helps to optimize workflows and enhance overall performance.

Problem Statement

Many organizations struggle to effectively track employee performance. It can be difficult to identify the reasons for poor performance, and motivate staff to improve. It can also be equally challenging to identify where staff are exceeding expectations and where they should be rewarded. Without a clear way to visualize performance data and understand both the root causes of high performance and underachievement, managers can’t provide targeted recognition or support. As a result, high performers may not be recognized, and underperformers may not receive the specific coaching they need to improve.

Solution

A centralized hub that combines performance tracking and improvement analysis, providing a clear, at-a-glance view of highs and lows across the system. This can be achieved using two interconnected dashboards.

1. Recognition Dashboard -  This dashboard combines gamification with performance tracking, highlighting wins and successes across various metrics, staff, departments, and campuses in an engaging and centralized way.

Main Features:

• Highlights High Performers - Identifies and highlights all top performing metrics, staff, and campuses

• Centralizes Metrics - Provides a centralized view of all high performing metrics at a high and granular level

• Tracks High Performance Over Time - Displays weekly rankings, as well as long term trends like top performers for the month, Best YTD Performers, and performers who are consistently ranked highly

• Rewards Progress - Highlights improved performance, ensuring that consistent improvement is celebrated as much as general high performance

2. Root Cause Dashboard - This dashboard spotlights areas that need improvement in real-time, allowing leadership to identify which metrics and staff require immediate attention and action.

Main Features:

• Pinpoints Performance Gaps - Flags metrics, staff, and departments that have fallen below goal

• Highlights Consistent Underperformance - Displays metrics & staff members that are consistently under goal

• Tracks Performance Declines - Highlights metrics & staff that have dropped significantly in performance

• Provides Links & Resources - Provides links to relevant metrics dashboards & training materials for struggling staff

Process

• Pull, compile, clean, and push data to server updating daily from Oracle Database (see Data Warehousing project for more details on how this is possible)

• Created calculations for high performing/low performing  metrics, departments, campuses, and staff in Python & Tableau prep

• Created clear visualizations in Tableau

• Shared findings with the team
